Title: Going back
Fandom: Firefly
Prompt: Orion
Warnings: Slash. A little kissing. Maybe some groping. And a major shmoop alert.
Rating: Aww, geez I’m really no good at that. PG-13, I’d say.
Summary: River wants to visit the parents. Simon doesn’t.
AN: According to Wikipedia “The stars were associated with Osiris, the god of death and underworld, by the ancient Egyptians. The Giza pyramid complex, which consists of the Great Pyramid of Giza, the Pyramid of Khafre and the Pyramid of Menkaure, is said to be a sky-map of the Belt of Orion, that is, of Osiris.” This is why the prompt ‘orion’ turned into a Firefly fic :) Possibly a first part of something slightly longer.
Simon stands in the cockpit and stares into the black. Somewhere out there, just a few more hours away, is his home planet, his parents and what used to be his whole life. Osiris, the core of the core planets, the center of light, civilization and order, everything he left behind to find River. As well as his bitterness, disappointment and cynicism, all he took along with him. And he has never regretted that. Because, as much as he hated to say the cliched sentence, he found a new family and home at the board of Serenity.
'Watcha doing here at this time of what passes for deep dark night out here?'
Ah. His new life has found him. Simon smiles a little but doesn't turn to Mal.
'Just wondering about Osiris. If it changed. How much I changed since then. And why would River want to come back to see... the Tams so much.'
Mal makes a horrified face. 'Gorramit, it's worse than I thought. I wake up to find my lover gone and when I finally find him, it turns out he left me for deep and profound thinkin'. I must be doin' somethin' wrong,' he jokes as he closes the distance between them and pulls his arms loosely around Simon, tracing a few quick kisses up his neck, to a delicate, lilly-white earlobe.
'Yes,' Simon confirms dryly. 'Turns out the hottest sex I had in my life is just not enough to keep me with you. You'll have to buy me a tacky 'Been to Osiris' souvenir when we get there so I don't feel nostalgic anymore.'
Mal chuckles. If the snark is still there, Simon's not that bad. Overthinking matters is normal for him, anyway.
'You don't gotta do that, you know. River can go by herself,' the captain offers, knowing exactly what answer he'll get.
'No, she can't,' Simon huffs. 'You know I wouldn't let her go by herself.'
'You also know she'd understand if you didn't want to see them. Hell, Simon, I don't want you to see them! Either of you.'
Simon's body goes stiff.
'And why is that, lover?' He's taken to calling Mal 'lover' when they fight, too, just to remind him that they're a lot closer now than when they had been just 'Doc' and 'Captain' and not everything can be swept under the figurative rug tagged 'I'm the captain of this ruttin' ship so don't go ordering me around'.
Mal sighs. This had to come out sooner or later, though he liked the 'later' option all kinds of better.
'Because I don't wanna see you walking away. I just... Simon, I don't wanna give you back to them. And they'll definitely want you and River back! And I can't exactly keep you on the ship forever, now can I, Doc?' Mal's hands tighten on Simon's waist as if he was already trying to hold him down. Of course, the smart doctor knows exactly how to wiggle and twist to face Mal without losing the strong embrace, so his 'holding down' strategy isn't really effective.
'Mal. Do you really think I could leave? That I would leave?' Or needed.
Two sets of blue eyes meet.
Ah, hell. Who needs verbal confirmation, when Simon's eyes shine like that?
And because Mal usually has ideas for using Simon's tongue, ideas more interesting than talking, he kisses the pretty, soft lips and decides that going away is not an option for either Simon or his sister.
A thought of meeting the in-laws flutters in his mind, but Simon's hand moves south and all his thoughts lose priority.
