Summary: Fura Tan entrusts Nolyn with the safekeeping of an egg.

Nolyn stared in surprise at the strangely warm object suddenly thrust into his hands.
As far as he could tell, it was an egg. Roughly the size of a melon, it was such a faint grey, it appeared nearly colorless. Well, without any light in the room, it was nothing but a swirl of smoky white. Warmth seeped into Nolyn’s hands as he cautiously held it away from him.
He turned his eyes to the demon still standing before him, his head tilted to one side. After a moment, Fura Tan nodded.
“It’ll do, I suppose. You need to keep it warm.”
“I do?”
Yellow eyes sprang to his. “Oh!” He grinned. “Will you watch this for me? It’s living, so be extra careful with it.”
Nolyn’s eyes widened and he tried to push it back onto Fura Tan. “What!?”
Fura Tan’s hands covered his own, pushing the egg close to his chest. “I can’t keep an eye on it, I’m too busy-”
“With what?” Nolyn demanded, rudely breaking in.
“Stuff. Demon stuff. You’ve no idea.” He moved Nolyn’s arms around the egg, making him hold it more securely. “Here, you keep it nice and warm for me, all right? It needs to be warm, or else it will die, and you really don’t want that.” He patted Nolyn on the head, then quickly disappeared out the door.
Nolyn stared after the man, more convinced than ever that he was a mad scientist. After a moment, he shrugged his shoulders and shifted the egg more comfortably in his arms. What could it hurt, after all? Nolyn wasn’t afraid of whatever was in the egg, and felt no need to refuse the demon’s request.
As the day’s light became stronger, he set aside the egg and reached for the blindfold that blocked the sun from his eyes. He considered the bed a moment then decided that he would sleep the daylight hours away. If anything, it would make the dragon, Silvan, happy to return and discover that Nolyn would be wide awake during the night hours, once again.
He smiled a small smile as he realized that he was becoming nocturnal.
He tied the blindfold firmly in place and gathered the egg close as he settled into the bed. Behind the covering, he could see nothing, the material thick enough and wide enough to block all light from his eyes. He ran his fingers over the surface of the egg and discovered tiny ridges.

As the days went by, the grey grew darker, the white duller. Then he woke one night to discover the grey had a hint of color to it. Like clouds in the sky, the smudges of color spread over the egg’s surface, growing in size with time.
Nolyn did his best to keep the thing warm, save sitting on it, like a bird.
Late at night, or midday as it often occurred, as Nolyn lay wrapped around the egg, Silvan took great pleasure holding the two of them in his arms, his fingers entangled with Nolyn’s on the egg’s surface.
It wasn’t until Nolyn caught Fura Tan rushing about that he discovered that the demon had no plans of retrieving the egg from Nolyn. The sorcerer caught the demon as he passed him in the hall, his arm snapping out and holding him by his collar.
“How much longer are you going to leave this egg with me?”
“Egg? What egg?”
Nolyn’s eyes narrowed and he held up the now vividly green egg, tinged with grey and white.
Fura Tan’s eyes widened and his lips curved into a smile. “Oh, that one. I forgot about it.”
“I noticed.”
“You can have it.”
Nolyn recoiled from the demon, “What? Why would I want it?”
Fura Tan’s grin grew. “Well, seeing as how you’ve taken such good care of it, and that it’s well on its way to hatching, I give it about two weeks at the most, I thought you would have become attached to it.”
Nolyn thinned his lips. While he had gotten quite used to the egg, there was no reason for him to have to keep the creature inside. It wasn’t even his idea to bring it here in the first place. He turned on his heels, knowing that if Fura Tan didn’t want the creature, then he would end up with it. There was no way he was going to send the hapless creature out on its own just after birth... hatching.
He heard Fura Tan’s low chuckle as he walked away. “Don’t worry so, Master Nolyn. It’ll not cause you any harm. If anything, it could cause more harm to Silvan than to you.”
Nolyn sat at a table, a single candle the only light in the room. “How’s that?”
Fura Tan shrugged. “Just be safe knowing that it won’t kill or harm anybody.”
“You just said-”
He held up a hand. “That it could cause harm to Silvan, not that it will.” He shrugged. “Besides, I should think you would like something to keep that dragon in line.” He winked and then was gone from sight.
Nolyn sighed, rubbing his fingers over the ridges of the egg. What kind of creature would come of it?
The grey had become no more than a thin outline of the green, the white still claiming most of the surface. As his fingers roamed the surface, he noticed that the green, in the middle of the clouds, was fading.
Ever after that, Nolyn closely watched the color fading from the egg. During the daylight hours, he kept the egg wrapped tightly in a blanket, with his warmth surrounding it as he slept, Silvan often finding his way into their bed to curl around the egg in his dragon form.
Although he never spoke of it, Nolyn had the distinct impression that Silvan knew what creature was in the egg. Sometimes, when his blindfold was off, he would catch Silvan watching them, a soft smile curving his lips.
His suspicions were brought to the forefront when the green had once again faded into white, the grey no more than marble lines over the surface. Silvan had spent the day lounging in bed while Nolyn slept, the egg clutched against his stomach. As the lazy hours passed in slow ticks of the clock, Silvan occupied himself with reading texts stolen from Fura Tan. As the sun set beyond the horizon, Nolyn yawned widely, his hand coming up to cover his parted lips.
“You don’t sleep?”
He felt the body next to him shrug. “I’m not tired. I’ve lazed about these past few days, I should think I would be bursting with energy.” He curled around Nolyn’s body, his chest to Nolyn’s back. A small kiss was pressed to a dark shoulder. Silvan reached around and caressed the egg.
“I wonder what kind of bird it will be.” Nolyn said, offhandedly.
“It’s not a bird,” Silvan said, the words slipping out before he realized what he had said. Nolyn shot him a slanted look and he grinned sheepishly.
“Then what, pray tell, is it?”
Silvan’s gaze slid away from his lover’s. Nolyn frowned, knowing that the dragon was hiding something from him. He knew what Fura Tan had plotted with this egg.
“Well, it is far too large to imagine a bird coming from that.”
“I see. So, you would rather imagine a carnivorous creature coming from this rather large egg?”
Silvan blinked at him, thinking rapidly before he suddenly leaned in and pressed another kiss to Nolyn’s exposed flesh. “I just remember something I must needs speak with Fura Tan about.” With that, he left the bed and retreated.
Nolyn watched him go, eyes narrowed, then he turned his attention away. He might as well get dressed and greet the night, he thought with a stretch. The egg rolled against his thigh, reminding him to cover it with the blanket, keeping their body warmth surrounding the egg for a few moments more. He considered it a moment longer.
“You’re probably some demon’s twisted get, magic and science blended together like it never should be.”

Nolyn decided to spend several extra hours asleep as he had stayed awake well into the morning. He snuggled into his pillow, one hand’s fingers entangled with Silvan’s as the dragon slept peacefully at his side, the other curved around the egg. While he had woke several moments before, he kept his eyes closed under the blindfold, relaxing in the warmth created by their two bodies. Truly, he didn’t want to leave the bed.
Something had woken him, although his mind was too sluggish to place what it had been. He stifled a yawn, his fingers touching on the silk of his blindfold. There was no sunlight, the air beyond the blankets cool. He pulled off the blindfold, eyes closed, a trace of fear touching him as he wondered if he had miscalculated and the sun was still shining into their tower room.
The room was dark. He breathed a sigh of relief and felt what had woken him. Something was pushing against his stomach. He lifted the blanket to see the egg, now completely without any traces of color, had cracked. The first thrill of terror quickly turned to one of elation as he watched the pieces move in response to the life within.
Sharply, he nudged Silvan in the ribs, causing the sleeping dragon to sit up with a start, a snarl on his lips. He blinked at Nolyn with a vacant look for a moment until he noticed the hatching egg.
Cooing softly, Nolyn helped the creature from its shell. Soft whimpers greeted his voice as a tiny muzzle emerged, pale white, with only a hint of grey and brown down. The egg cracked as the furred lizard pushed against it, eyes still sealed shut.
Nolyn felt his stomach drop as he caught the baby dragon in his hands, its tiny mouth opening to show rows of sharp teeth as it cried out. He glared at Silvan.
“Dragons are extinct.”
Deep blue eyes turned to his as Silvan merely smiled, his fingers brushing against the soft down. “Are they indeed?”
“You are only a dragon because you made a wish by a Wish Granter. Where did it come from?”
“Oh, I had Fura Tan make it for us.” He grinned his most charming grin, the same one that had gotten him out of numerous scrapes as a child.
Nolyn’s eyes narrowed dangerously. Fura Tan was right, the egg would cause Silvan harm, Nolyn felt anger bubbling up and was hard pressed not to smack the other man as he gazed down at the baby dragon with eyes filled with emotion.
Then Nolyn sighed, he’d been right as well, the egg had been a demon’s get of magic and science.
