Prompt 95 - Mime - "Damsel In Distress" 3/? - [livejournal.com profile] spikespetslayer -

Title: Damsel In Distress 3/?
Fandom: Harry Potter
Pairing: Eventually Draco Malfoy/Hermione Granger
Rating: PG
Warnings: none
Summary: Hermione needs to get out of the Manor and has an interesting but uninformative encounter with Lucius Malfoy.

After three days with the Malfoys, Hermione was starting to believe that she had been transported through a wormhole into another reality that had nothing to do with real life.

They didn’t speak to her and she didn’t speak to them. Her meals were brought to the sumptuous guestroom by a house elf dressed in an embroidered tea towel and a headscarf with the Malfoy crest proudly displayed over her right ear.

Still reeling from the attack of the Chimera, Hermione recuperated as best she could, under the strange circumstances. She ate the rich food, she read the leather-bound books, and she slept. The cycle repeated itself over and over until she thought that she would lose her mind.

Malfoy junior was still ensconced in St. Mungo's, for what reason she didn’t know. No one thought to enlighten her; she was left to her own devices, her only company the singular house elf that brought her food and cleaned her room.

Her dreams were filled with faceless enemies and strange portents along with stranger imagery that baffled her with their idiosyncratic appearances. A mime dressed in black with a stark white face was trying to escape an invisible box, his gloves patting a circle around him while she watched and tried to understand. A pig flew around him in circles and landed on the grass next to her where she sat on a blanket of Slytherin colors in a field of red and yellow poppies. She was as alone in her dreams as she was in her room and the craziness of the situation finally drove her around the bend.

With a huff, she left her room for the first time in three days and tried to find her way out of the massive house and outside to the garden that she had espied from the window high above.

She passed through rooms of priceless antiquities, none of which held her interest long enough to explore them. She had to get out of this house and outside, even if just for a moment to feel the sunlight on her face and breathe air not tainted by the fear of imprisonment that petrified her when Lucius flooed them into the drawing room of Malfoy Manor.

She looked up at the chandelier that night and froze, the memories of her torture by Bellatrix LeStrange as fresh in her mind as if it was happening at that moment. Lucius had flung her arm down and called for a house elf and she broke free from her waking nightmare long enough to follow the elf to the room that she had just escaped from.

There were no good memories in that house for her and she had to get out as soon as possible.

She finally found a door that opened to the exterior of the house and reached for the latch, only to find it shocked her when she tried to grasp it.

“It’s charmed to keep intruders out, Ms. Granger. Unfortunately, the charm works both ways—it also keeps those not of Malfoy blood in.”

She turned to look at the man behind her, gazing coolly down at her. “I had no idea, Mr. Malfoy. Can I go outdoors or is that forbidden?”

He strolled past her and opened the door easily, something that he could have done as well with his wand but choosing to do so to illustrate his power over her. With a wave of his hand, he invited her to walk in his estate’s garden.

She was surprised when he fell in step beside her, his hands behind his back and his nose in the air as he shortened his stride to allow her to keep up with him.

They walked in silence for a time, Hermione enjoying the fresh air and sun and Lucius keeping his own countenance. He cleared his throat and looked down at the top of her head before speaking in low tones.

“I rarely question my son when it comes to things best left unsaid, ms. Granger, but I find myself wondering exactly why he was in that cave when the Chimera attacked you that day.”

She looked up, startled by his statement and unspoken question. “I’ve been wondering that as well, Mr. Malfoy. Malfoy—Draco and I have never been very friendly but I appreciate the efforts that he made and chances he took to save my life. I could have never made it out alive had it not been for him.”

“Indeed. He has never asked us to afford protection to anyone before either, did you know? I wonder why he was so insistent with his request this time.”

“That is a question best asked him, I believe. When are they planning to release him from St. Mungo’s? Any time soon?”

“I believe that he will be returning to the manor on the morrow, Ms. Granger. We will certainly attempt to obtain the answers we need then, shall we not?” He paused and she stopped alongside him to look up at his proud, aristocratic face, so like his son’s.

“I believe that I will take my leave of you. Enjoy the sun, Ms. Granger. You seemed quite pale the night we arrived.”

“Believe me, Mr. Malfoy, it had nothing whatsoever to do with a lack of sunlight.”

With a veiled look of understanding, he turned and left, leaving her alone in the garden.
