Lucius Malfoy peered into the room where his son was being tutored. Draco sat straight-backed in his chair, a book open on the desk, and an abacus in his hands. His tutor, a boring but reliable and sympathetic man named Gerald, stood in front of a chalkboard covered with numbers.

Gerald asked a question and Draco was quick to answer, causing Lucius to smile.

“Don’t disturb them,” said Narcissa, pulling on his robes until he had turned his attention to her.

“I won’t,” Lucius assured her. “I merely enjoy watching them for a few minutes whenever I get the chance.”

Narcissa smiled. “He’s doing so well. Gerald simply raves about him.” She paused, and led her husband out of earshot of the room. They walked leisurely down the long, bright hallway leading from one end of the Manor to the other. “Well, as much as he could possibly rave about anything.”

Lucius nodded. “The man has no emotions whatsoever. We could fire him today, and he wouldn’t so much as raise his voice, or accuse us of being unfair.”

“He can be dreadfully dull. Do you think it’s detrimental to Draco?” A worried frown flitted across her face. “Perhaps we should take Sarah Nott’s advice, and send him to the weekly sessions with other kids his age.”

“Perhaps,” he conceded, though he loathed the fact that the idea hadn’t been his. “If you think it would be beneficial.”

“I do,” Narcissa said solemnly. “We want him to have friends when he starts at Hogwarts.”

Lucius stopped and gazed at his wife. “He will, Cissa. There’s nothing to worry about.”

“Sometimes … I can’t help but wish he had a brother or a sister,” Narcissa whispered, staring out the window at the back gardens.

Lucius’ chest clenched tightly at the raw pain in her eyes. He gathered her into his arms and she melted against him, resting her head on his shoulder. “I know,” he said softly. “As do I.” A lone tear made its way down her porcelain cheek, and Lucius wiped it away.

“It’s not fair!” she cried in a whisper. “When I see the other children, I simply can’t help myself. I feel angry and jealous, and I don’t like feeling that way, Lucius. Some of them will have brothers and sisters soon … When I see other pregnant wives …”

“There, there,” he said, soothingly stroking her hair. He knew she didn’t want to cry again over their inability to have another child, but he also knew that the wound was fresh and raw. They had only been told five months prior that she wouldn’t be able to conceive again. In fact, after extensive testing had been done, it was discovered that she never should have been successful at all.

Muffled sounds echoed down the hall, and Narcissa quickly wiped her face. Gerald was leading Draco outside for a lesson in plants. When he spotted his parents, he stopped and waved, a bright smile on his face.

They waved back, and Lucius entwined his fingers with his wife’s. “He’ll do great things, Cissa.”

“How can you be sure?” she asked, her voice hitching in the middle.

“He was a miracle. Our miracle.” He gave her strong, petite hand a squeeze. “Just wait, my love. He’ll surprise us, you’ll see.”
