Fandom: Harry Potter
Characters/Pairings: Dar'Quing/Jenessa
Rating: G
Prompt: #109 Anguish (

Warnings: AU
Summary: A small group of wizards steal eggs from some dragons and the dragons vow revenge
Disclaimer: I don’t own the HP-verse, unfortunately. No money being made and no offense intended
A/N: This is mostly original, but some of the characters alluded to are from the HP-verse. I hadn't planned on doing anything for the prompt, but this came to me like lightning and I knew I had to write it. :P
It was during the second World War and a powerful wizard named Grindelwald had sided with Adolph Hitler. The dragons were staying out of it, however. Only wizards, magical creatures, and a few non-magical humans knew of the existence of dragons, and they had all been told that the dragons were not going to become embroiled in the affairs of men.
Dar'Quing, the King of Dragons, was in the Hall of Mirrors when he heard his mate give out a cry of anger and sadness, a cry of anguish, coming from the egg chamber. The King of Dragons rushed out of the room to see what had upset his mate. In a few weeks the eggs would hatch and there were rumors that a powerful wizard possessed an item that could bind a young dragon to his or her will.
The King of Dragons met his wife, Jenessa, on his way down there. Her eyes were whirling wildly and the quills lining her back were rattling with anger. Dar'Quing caught his mate's eyes and began sending her calming thoughts as he approached cautiously, making sure not to break eye contact. When he was close enough he ran his clawed hands slowly up and down the scales where her wings attached to her body. Her quills ceased their rattling after a few minutes of this and her eyes slowed their whirling, but stayed a dark, angry red.
What has happened, my love? He asked her when she was calm enough, continuing to rub her scales.
They have taken our eggs! She responded, her eyes whirling faster, but slowed as he continued to send thoughts of calmness. The King of Dragons had suspected as much, but needed to hear her say it all the same.
Dar'Quing pricked his forepaw, drawing blood, and whispered an incantation over it before lapping up the blood and kissing his mate, passing the blood to her. Her motions become sluggish as the Essence of Somnolence began its work. He led her to their sleeping chamber nearby and carefully placed her on the platform.
Once she was fully asleep he hurried down to the egg camber. A quick count of the eggs revealed that only the smallest was taken. While size was no real indication of power or biddability, most non-dragons might assume that a small egg would be easily missed. Dar'Quing knew that his mate probably would have searched for signs of the perpetrator, but she may have also missed something in her agitated state.
A slight shift in the rock out of the corner of his eye revealed the likely entrance and exit. The King of Dragons sniffed around and scanned the area with magic to gain an idea of the individual he was looking for. The thief was male and on the young side of average, possibly making him slightly more impressionable. While he wasn't powerful, the egg stealer had the presence of mind to absorb some of the rock's element into his magical core and rock dust likely covered his body, thus making him slightly harder to trace once he escaped into the mountain with his prize. The trail seemed to be about an hour or so old, meaning the thief had likely escaped successfully with his ill-gotten gain.
The perpetrator didn't smell familiar, but Dar'Quing had a good idea who the mastermind was. Grindelwald and Dumbledore had each approached him asking for assistance within the last few weeks, though Grindelwald seemed more demanding than Dumbledore. The King of Dragons didn't trust either wizard, however. While Grindelwald was the more malicious of the two, Dumbledore was just as willing to manipulate others into doing things his way. There were few wizards throughout the world that the elder dragons trusted, and few of them resided in Europe.
Dar'Quing concluded his search and called upon the lair-elf to move the eggs to a more secure area and wait by Jenessa's side until she awoke so she could be directed to the new egg chamber. Once the lair-elf had moved all the eggs, the King of Dragons collapsed the tunnel the thief had used to gain access to the old egg chamber and shifted some of the cavern walls to close off the old egg chamber.
His return to the Hall of Mirrors garnered similar reports from some of the other dragon lords, causing all of them to begin investigations of their own. Dar'Quing suspected that only the dragons residing in Europe and western Asia had been targeted, but it never hurt to be sure.
Some of the dragons called for vengeance upon the wizarding community, but the King of Dragons calmed them down and reminded them not all dragons were egg stealers. Most wizards knew little about dragons in general and almost nothing about the elder dragons. Dar’Quing did vow, however, that whoever the mastermind was, they would pay dearly for presuming to steal their children and expect to get away with it.
