I've never written original fiction before so slightly unsure about this. I still hope you enjoy!

On December 13th we celebrate Saint Lucy's Day here in Finland. This story is based on that day. If you want to read more of the celebration there's some info on it here

Lena woke up and stretched. It took her a while to remember what day it was and as soon as she did she could feel nervous knots forming in her stomach. She looked at the clock and noticed that it was still quite early. It was still quite a few hours before she was expected anywhere. She got up and walked to the kitchen. When she opened the fridge she noticed that there were only a few paltry items in there. It was quite obvious she needed to do some shopping that day. Still she managed to prepare some breakfast for herself. She also enjoyed a big cup of coffee and hoped it would wake her up a bit more. Of course the bitter drink didn't help the state of her stomach. Every time she thought about what was waiting for her later that night, she could feel butterflies having a party in her stomach. She had only known about it for a few days and those days had been spent in a state of mixed feelings.

After her breakfast Lena turned on her cellphone. It didn't take long before she could hear it beeping quite a few times signalling that she had received messages. When she checked the phone it told her that there were five unread messages. She clicked the needed buttons to open the messages. She wasn't too surprised when they all ended up being congratulations from her friends and family. She suspected there would be more of them coming as the day progressed. As far as she knew the announcement would only be in the papers that day and it might take a while before the news spread. She herself had been told a few days in advance but asked not to tell anyone else.

Since she still had some time to waste she booted up her computer to check a few sites. She also logged into her e-mail and found a few congratulation messages there too. It was quite obvious his friends and family had read their papers carefully that morning. Sure it had been public knowledge that she had been nominated but still the amount of congratulations this early in the morning was surprising, especially since she really hadn't known to expect to be the winner. In her opinion there had been quite a few others that had a lot better chances of winning.

Somehow Lena managed to find something to do for herself for a few hours. She went through the contents of her fridge and cupboards while she made a shopping list for everything she needed from the store. She also needed to buy something for later since some of her friends were coming around. After she thought she had everything listed she made her way to the store. There was no hurry so she took her time browsing. There were quite a few other people in there as well. Lena guessed it was due to the fact that Christmas was close and people were already preparing for that.

After she returned from the store she still had a few hours to waste so she settled in front of the TV and channel surfed for a while. There wasn't much on. Of course since it was early Saturday afternoon, she hadn't really expected much but at least it provided her with something to do for a while.

Finally it was time for her to go. She chose some light colored clothes to put on but at the same time made sure she was dressed warmly. She had a long night ahead of her and she really didn't want to be cold. When she was ready she made her way to the Cathedral where she met the other persons taking part in the procession. She was given her white gown which was tied with a wide red ribbon. Lena was happy to notice that the gown felt quite warm so maybe the chill of the winter night wouldn't get to him. Finally it was time for the part Lena had been the most anxious of, the crown of candles was placed on her head. When the crown was on place her long blond hair was combed so that it was framing her face as well as falling down her back. Next the candles were lit. She tried to stand very still so that no wax from the candles would drop in her hair. She knew there would probably be some in her hair in every case but it never hurt to be careful. It was already making her nervous enough that she had actual live candles on top of her head.

There were still some arrangements to be done but finally they were ready. Lena took her place at the head of the procession and waited. When the cathedral's doors were opened she started to walk slowly out and down the stairs. They had practiced the right pace of walking a few times previously and she was also helped by the rhythm of the familiar song the procession behind her was singing. She silently joined into the song inside her head.

Taivaalla tähtivyö
kirkkaana loistaa,
viestiä jouluyön
tuikkeensa toistaa.
Taivainen kirkkaus,
riemuisa julistus.
Kynttilät syttyy,
kynttilät syttyy.

Sankta Lucia
ljusklara hägring
Sprid i vår vinternatt
glans av din fägring
Drömmar med vinge
sus under oss sia
Tänd dina vita ljus
Sankta Lucia

When she made it down all the stairs there was a carriage waiting for her. She was helped into it and covered with a pile of blankets. It was quite obvious she didn't need to be worried about getting cold. A few other persons from the procession joined her in the carriage while everyone else got into the other carriage standing behind the one where Lena was sitting in. They were still singing the song but Lena just concentrated on watching all the people who had gathered on the market place for the occasion. She could see quite a few people holding candles and it actually looked pretty amazing in the dark winter night. Then the carriages were already moving. The Santa Lucia song had changed into a Christmas carol. Lena just enjoyed listening to it as well as to the bells that had been attached to the horses pulling the carriages. He also tried to remember to wave to the people who had gathered to stand at the sides of the road.

It didn't take long before they were at their first stopping place. Lena was again helped out of the carriage and then she lead the procession into the retirement home. They were again singing the same song they had started with since they knew that was the song people wanted to hear. They stayed to sing a few songs in that place before continuing to the next place. Lena knew they had quite a few places to visit. Her nervousness was almost gone. It had been replaced by feeling happy about the fact that she was obviously bringing happiness and light into peoples' life.

When Lena finally made it back home she was feeling quite tired. It was surprisingly tiring to smile and wave at people even if she had been happy to do it. The candle crown she had worn had weighted quite a lot and it had forced her to keep her posture straight at all times. She now felt the effects in her back. All she actually wanted to do now was to lie down but she knew she needed to prepare for her friends coming over later. Therefore she was quite surprised when she opened the door to her apartment to find all her friends already there. She was directed to sit on the sofa and told that everything had already been done for her. All she needed to do was to sit still for the rest of the evening. Lena felt very grateful. She accepted her plate filled with different delicacies and a glass of punch. Life couldn't be much better. She had been given the honor of being the Maid Lucia, an honor that was pursued by several dozen girls every year, and now she was surrounded by her dear friends with plenty of good food and drinks nearby. All in all the day could be deemed as being a success despite the fact that she had been feeling really nervous in the morning. She knew there would still be some interviews she needed to do the following week but she would worry about those later. Now she just wanted to enjoy the company of her friends.
