He didn’t make it far from the master’s chambers before the housekeeper zeroed in on him. He shot a quick look down the hall for an escape rout before he subsided, letting himself become caught in the bat’s grasps.
She looked him up and down through dark, narrowed eyes that reminded him of his mother. He smiled charmingly, a smile that he knew always had women melting at the sight of it, but this woman was made of sterner stuff. She sniffed at him and bobbed a quick curtsy.
“You are Lord Coatl.”
Temuji blinked. “I am?”
She narrowed her eyes once again and squared her shoulders. “The lord says you are going to take care of the boy after he’s gone.” Her tone implied sincere doubt about his capabilities. He forced his smile to remain firmly in place while he ran his fingers through the hair hanging over his shoulder.
“Yes, I’ve agreed to this.”
She didn’t like him. Not one bit. Maybe thought he was pompous, or perhaps just frivolous? He lowered his lids, watching her from thin slits between his lashes as her lips thinned and she turned about, motioning for him to follow.
“There are things you must know about the boy.”
That caught his attention. He meekly followed, idly watching how her hips swung from side to side. She really wasn’t that old, maybe even younger than himself. Her auburn hair was tightly pulled back into a sever bun at the nape of her neck and hidden away under a kerchief. She put herself off as older, probably to make the other servants give her heed.
“The boy is troubled. As I’m sure, Lord Davin informed you.” She didn’t wait for him to respond, but continued on, barely pausing for breath. “He needs a caretaker that will have the time and patience to see to him. While he is young, he has so much on his shoulders, what having the Diamond Blood running through his veins.” She turned a corner and proceeded to march across the open hall toward the grand stairs leading to the second and third floors.
Temuji opened his mouth to speak but the woman spun about on the second stair, staring him right in the eye.
“Tell me the truth, milord. Can you care for him? Can you be there for him, to protect him and teach him as he grows?”
He smiled slowly and was most pleased when her eyes dropped to his lips before quickly shying away, a faint pink blush coming to her cheeks. He mounted the first steep, once again standing above her and murmured low, “I’ll care for him as if he were my own.”
She stood her ground, face flushed, eyes narrowed a moment before she jerked her chin up with such force their noses almost collided and spun about, marching up the stairs.
“Good. I expect you to keep to that.” They quickly left the stairs behind. It was as if the woman couldn’t wait to be rid of him. “That child has much more strength than one would assume from his body, but he is fragile, so don’t put too much stress on him.”
Temuji suddenly had the image of a child pushing a massive boulder, several times larger than himself and his lips curved in faint humor as he rolled his eyes at the woman’s back.
“One would assume, as a good caretaker, I wouldn’t put undue stress on a child at all.”
She stiffened and paused in her stride. With a discreet glance, he saw her shoot him a glare before she continued. “The Diamond Blood is strong within him. Do you know what that means?”
“Not really.”
Did she snort? Surely not. She was a fine lady, and fine ladies didn’t do something so uncouth. He politely ignored it and hid his laughter behind a cough.
“It means that he can not yet control it.”
That gave him pause. “Is it dangerous to him or others?”
She slowly shook her head. “I don’t think so. We’ve had no injuries here, but who knows? You will have to keep a close eye on him, else the magic will take over.” Here she once again paused to level him a hard look. “He can’t be blamed for what his magic makes him do. Don’t be hard on him when his magic causes trouble.”
Temuji arched a red brow, “How else will he learn to control it?”
Her lips thinned. “When his magic takes control, he feels ashamed as it is. Let that be enough. When he grows, he’ll grow into the magic.”
“You care for him.”
She visibly flinched and looked away from him. “I do.”
“Then why don’t you ask to take him yourself?”
Her eyes were bright from unshed tears. “Because I’m only human. I don’t that the strength or power to protect him.” She sniffed once then gathered herself behind her mantle of servitude. “You have magic and guile that will help in his survival. After all, that’s what is most important. That he lives.”
He felt humbled. His smile dropped away as he wondered why these people were trusting him with something so important to them. This woman didn’t even know who he was, but she still trusted him with this child’s life.
The housekeeper came to a set of double doors and opened one, stepping to one side. Temuji followed her in and was startled to find himself in a breakfast solar. His mouth watered at the scents wafting from the side board. Then his eyes honed in on a bottle of expensive, imported wine. He grinned and turned to the housekeeper.
“I had the cook prepare you a dinner,” she said with a curt nod in the direction of the table, as if he couldn’t smell the wonderful aromas filling the room. “If it would please you, I’ll show you to the young master after your meal.”
He reached out and fingered the bit of lace she allowed herself at the high collar of her blouse. “It would please me if you join me for a glass of wine.” He leaned close enough that his breath fanned her cheek. “I do so enjoy the company of a beautiful woman with my wine.”
She glared at him and tugged free with another one of those annoying sniffs of distain. “I’m sure.” She dipped her head in a bow. “I have other duties to see to, if you don’t mind, milord.” She turned to make good on her escape, her back as stiff as a board. “Ring the bell when you are finished and I’ll bring you to him. Good meal, sir.”
He’d been demoted from lord to sir. He chuckled and finally removed his jacket, laying the heavy black folds over the table before turning his attention to the buffet. She was brilliant; he was starving.
Then he realized that he still didn’t know the child’s name.
