Chapter 6 Part 1

Buffy looked a Lex and she tried to smile. The corners of her mouth turned up into something that could even resemble one. He returned the gesture looking out of place in the living room her mother had decorated. Their life had been cotton while his was silk. Sure, she had been privileged but not to the point that man in front of her was. The man she shared blood with.

“We can leave in the morning, or the next day if you need more time to pack your things.” Lex told her softly relief in his voice. There was something else, it almost sounded like gratitude.

Buffy looked over to her friends. Willow looked stunned her hand gripping Oz’s tightly and Xander looked confused, like he didn’t understand what had just happened. But Oz, Oz knew. When Buffy met his eyes he just nodded his head.

“No, the morning’s fine. I’ll pack tonight.” It wasn’t like she would get any sleep. She hadn’t been able to sleep since it had happened. Throughout the day she tried to stay numb. She kept herself busy. But night when she had to settle down her mind wouldn’t turn off. She couldn’t stop thinking about it.

Her mom was gone.

Sometimes she even wanted her dad, wanted Hank. She remembered the way he would scoop her up in his arms and spin her about. She remembered the last summer she had spent with him and the room in the new house he had told her proudly was hers. Her memories were unclouded with bias or pain, he had just been her dad.

He had even offered to help her paint it but she had been too lost in what had happened with the Master.

She didn’t understand any of it. How the people she had loved had slipped out of her life so easily? How her life could change so drastically in one second? In the second it took her to realize her mom wasn’t going to open her eyes or that Hank Summers wasn’t listed as her father on her original birth certificate.

Lionel Luthor was.

She didn’t even know how her mom had met the man. They belonged to completely different circles. But somehow they had meet, had...relations, and nine months later Buffy was born and for the next 17 years told a lie about her life. She wanted to be angry at her mom, but she couldn’t.

“Then I’ll see you tomorrow morning, is eight fine for you?”

Buffy turned back to him nodding her head “That will work, see you then.”

He gave her a soft smile and there was something in eyes that captivated Buffy. There was understanding, compassion, and there was longing. He didn’t even know anything about her other than the fact that his dad had been intimate with her mom but still he had flown halfway around the United States. She thought she might understand it. From what she understood about Lionel Luthor he was a cold, manipulative bastard with more money than god and a corporate shark. I couldn’t have been easy being raised by a man like that.

It made Buffy wonder, what would she have done if she had found out she had a little sister somewhere out in the world?

Giles didn’t like him and didn’t trust him, but Buffy wanted to. A part of her needed to. She watched him leave silently following him to the door and she saw the shiny black car pulled up to her house. She had just agreed to go live with him in some town called Smallville.

In Kansas.

Buffy closed the door and turned around to find all eyes on her. She was tired, and drained. She wetted her lips and cleared her throat “I’m gonna go...pack.” She was already walking up the stairs on the way to her room and she heard Willow whisper something to Oz. She could feel Xander behind her and she knew Willow would follow him.

It would have been too much to ask her friends to let her go without saying anything.
