Hello everyone! *waves*
Sorry for the late posting on this.
It’s time for our April monthly challenge!
1000+ word re-telling of a familiar story or fable.
This should be a complete story, rather than a part of a larger piece, however, it can be original or fan fiction.
Entries will need to be received by midnight 31 April. at GMT -12. We’ll issue a closed post as we do with the weekly prompts.
When you post your entry, please tag it for the challenge.
You do not have to be a regularly contributing member of the community to participate. This challenge is optional and open to everyone.
You are allowed to use the monthly challenge in conjunction with any of the weekly prompts this month as long as you follow all the requirements for both. So, for this month, you would:
Example:
From the Aesop Fable, The Mouse, the Frog, and the Hawk (copied from project gutenberg):
The original fable is as follows: A Mouse, by an unlucky chance, formed an intimate acquaintance with a Frog. The Frog one day, intent on mischief, bound the foot of the Mouse tightly to his own. Thus joined together, the Frog led his friend toward the pool in which he lived, until he reached the very brink, when suddenly jumping in, he dragged the Mouse in with him. The Frog enjoyed the water amazingly, and swam croaking about as if he had done a meritorious action. The unhappy Mouse was soon suffocated with the water, and his dead body floated about on the surface, tied to the foot of the Frog. A Hawk observed it, and, pouncing upon it, carried it up aloft. The Frog, being still fastened to the leg of the Mouse, was also carried off a prisoner, and was eaten by the Hawk.
You write a tale in the Buffy verse where Xander wants to leave Anya, but Anya gets wind of his plan and puts him under a spell so he will stay. But as a result of the spell Xander becomes compeltly mindless and is unable to care for himself in the most basic way (like feeding himself etc).
You aren't limited to fables, you can retell fairy tales, local folk tales - anything you like. The idea is to take something familiar and make it your own. Feel free to include a link to the source material. Please note, we are not looking to encourage plagiarism. Make sure your story is a retelling. If you are unsure ask someone to evaluate it. The mods would be happy to do that, also. Just email us at tamingmods at gmail dot com.
Good luck everyone!

Also now that there have been several of these challenges, we'd like your feedback.
Would you guys like word limit variations on these? Most have been 1000 words.
Based on the fb or concrit (which is the point of the challenges), would you like them to continue being limited to one-shots?
Or would you like to have a monthly poll or some other standardized way to rate the entries?

You are allowed to use the monthly challenge in conjunction with any of the weekly prompts this month as long as you follow all the requirements for both. So, for this month, you would:
Include the weekly prompt in your story- It would be a stand-alone, short story of 1000 words or more retelling a well known story or fable
- It would be posted by the earlier of the two deadlines (midnight Saturday, or midnight on the 31st).

Harm hatch, harm catch.

Date: 2009-04-01 08:58 pm (UTC)I do have to be honest and say I wish it wasn't always limited to the shots though because for those of us who are focused on working on longer works, it's too confining. I don't care about attracting new people so much as I do taking on a fresh challenge, but I'm pretty much barred because I prefer to focus on long term fan fiction or original works.
Oh, and no polls. I never participated in those. Don't have time and I don't really care, to be honest. I write for myself and the challenge, and then for anyone who happens to be involved with reading the work.

Date: 2009-04-30 03:16 am (UTC)When I read this challenge I knew I wanted to participate. I have been working on my fairy tale retell for weeks and I'm nearly complete. I know I probably won't make the deadline as finals are this week and my attention has been on school. But I did want to say that this challenge brought me out of a 4 year block and would have only been my 3rd story post in the Buffyverse.
I am not a contributor, but I am a regular reader.
Maybe next time!
