Hiya Tamers! Here it is, the first of the monthly challenges. I meant to post this earlier, but sick!Mod is sick and really fuzzy headed. Colds suck.

January's challenge will be:

Everyday Magic

Remember, all prompts are open to interpretation by the author. Make the prompt your own!

Comments and Questions welcome via the Contact the Mods page

Hiya Tamers! Welp, here's the rules and FAQs for the new monthly challenge.

At the beginning of every month a prompt, theme, or trope will be posted. You will have the whole month to write something for the challenge.

Unlike the weekly prompts, earning awards will not add up. An award will be awarded for each month separately, so if you write for every month you will have 12 awards by the end of the year.

Interested? Okay, here's the rules/FAQs:

What can/do we write?

Well, there are two ways you can write for the challenge.

  1. Write something specifically for that month's prompt/theme/trope, just like a weekly prompt. Simple, right.(Easy)

  2. Incorporate the theme/prompt/trope into your weekly prompts by:

    • Writing the monthly challenge into each of your weekly prompts. (Medium)

    • Writing a continous piece that uses each weekly prompt as well as the monthly challenge. (Hard)

Will the awards differ by level?

Yes they will.

What are the word limits?

If you write the first, easiest option, the minimum word count is 2000 words. It seems like a lot, but that is over a whole month.

If you choose either of the other two choices there will be no minimum since it will be part of the weekly prompts which already has a minimum word count.

What is the time limit?

The prompt/trope/theme will be posted on the first of the month. You have until the last day of the month at 11:59 pm EST to post.

How do we use the monthly prompt/theme/trope?

Like always, things are open to interpretation by the author. We want you to make the prompts your own. If you'd like some idea how to use them, check out this, it has good ideas of how to play with tropes, which can by applied to any prompt or theme too.

What are the awards?

Everyone that writes and posts for the monthly challenge will get a banner with their name, the theme/prompt/trope, and possibly a muse of their choice (I'm still debating that part).

Those who write for the harder two options will get an icon as well.

There will be tags for the monthly challenges, as always, please use them. If you write options 2 or 3 you should tag each post with the monthly tag as well.

Posts should have an appropriate header.

If you choose to write for options 2 or 3, at the end of the month make a post with a header and links to all the parts, and tag with the monthly tag.

If you have any questions you can contact the mods here or email us here.

Hello fellow muse tamers!

It's again time for the monthly challenge. Due to communication error between us mods, it's a few days late but you get a few extra days to get your entries in.

Again trying something different. Feel free to tell me your thoughts about doing the prompts this way. Also if you have any other ideas about handling the monthly prompts, feel free to share.

Anyway, the prompt is the following

Write a 1000+ word story. This should be a complete story, rather than a part of a larger piece, however, it can be original or fan fiction. Since it's Summer I thought it would be good to have you place your story in darkness. Otherwise you have free reign.

Entries will need to be received by midnight 6th August at GMT -12. We'll issue a closed post as we do with the weekly prompts.

When you post your entry, please tag it for the challenge.

You do not have to be a regularly contributing member of the community to participate. This challenge is optional and open to everyone.

You are allowed to use the monthly challenge in conjunction with any of the weekly prompts this month as long as you follow all the requirements for both. So, for this month, you would:
- Include the weekly prompt in your story
- It would be a stand-alone, a story of 1000 words or more placed in darkness
- It would be posted by the earlier of the two deadlines (midnight Saturday, or midnight on the 6th).

Notice to all interested in doing the Monthly Challenge. Due to me being late with posting the prompt the deadline has now been extended to 5th of November. That gives a few extra days to get your entries in. Sorry again for being late with it.

I also already now know that I will be unable to post the November prompt on the 1st of Nov. I should be able to get it up on the 3rd.

May Challenge
Hello everyone! *waves*

It’s time for our May monthly challenge! There are a few changes this time around. We're setting the word length to 1000+ words for all the monthly challenges.

We're also going to start allowing the challenges to be incorporated as part of a larger piece - so not all will be one shots. So, unless a challenge specifies it's a one shot, you can use it as part of a longer piece. Both fan fic and original are welcome.

So, without further ado...here's this months challenge:

Write a story/chapter using the Third-person, omniscient narrative style.

Entries will need to be received by midnight 31 May. at GMT -12. We’ll issue a closed post as we do with the weekly prompts.

When you post your entry, please tag it for the challenge.

You do not have to be a regularly contributing member of the community to participate. This challenge is optional and open to everyone.

  • You are allowed to use the monthly challenge in conjunction with any of the weekly prompts this month as long as you follow all the requirements for both. So, for this month, you would:

  • Include the weekly prompt in your story

  • It would be a 1000 words or more told using the narrative style of Third-person, omniscient

  • It would be posted by the earlier of the two deadlines (midnight Saturday, or midnight on the 31st).

If you're not quite sure about the specific narrative style...here's the info from the Wiki:

The third-person omniscient is a narrative mode in which both the reader and author observe the situation either through the senses and thoughts of more than one character, or through an overarching godlike perspective that sees and knows everything that happens and everything the characters are thinking. Third-person omniscient is virtually always the narrative mode chosen for sprawling, epic stories such as J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, Fielding's Tom Jones, or the great Russian novels of the nineteenth century.

However, while a godlike all-knowing perspective necessarily uses third-person omniscient, there are other uses for this narrative mode. Third-person omniscient simply means that the narrator can tell the reader things that the main character does not know, or things that none of the characters know, or things that no human being could ever know (e.g., what the first conscious creature felt like as it climbed out of the primordial ooze). While third-person omniscient is associated with sweeping, epic stories, not all third-person omniscient narratives stray beyond the characters' knowledge and experiences. For example, Jane Austen's novels are third-person omniscient in that the narrator describes the thoughts and feelings of more than one character, but Austen's novels typically focus closely on a very small number of characters and their milieu.

Third-person omniscient point of view can change viewpoint characters instantly, by contrast with the third-person limited point of view, which limits narration to what can be known, seen, thought, or judged from a single character's perspective.

An Example can be found here from the book "The Bad Beginning" by Lemony Snicket:

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=4231846

Good luck!

Let us know if you have any questions.
