Summary: Charlotte's childhood friend returns.

Kara was back. A short, fey-like girl with big, dark eyes and a slim, boyish figure. She was exactly as Charlotte remembered her from their child hood. When she stood in the front yard, feet planted far apart like she belonged there, the setting sun lit her from behind in a dazzling golden glow, throwing fire into her dark, wild hair. It was short, shorter than when she was younger, but it suited her even more now. Her face had grown a little sharper, the sophistication of maturity beginning to replace the plump baby face, her her cheeks were still like apples. In all, she was very much the same girl that Charlotte remembered, only much more beautiful with age. Charlotte could see that things had changed, but when a wild grin came across Kara's face, at least something was the same.

She was there to stay, Kara told her. Her parents had just moved back to the neighborhood, and she wanted to spend the night with Charlotte to escape the chaos of unpacking. It was like old times, she said as she hugged her friend tightly. They tramped through Charlotte's house while their parents stayed outside, catching up on events and making small talk. It was comfortable here, and Kara was very excited to see her old friend.

They would stay up late, Kara told Charlotte. Make a fort under the blankets with flashlights and talk, only this time it would be better because they were older, and they knew better things to talk about and could stay up later. She didn't mention the other things, like how they used to play, like how they tried to kiss once and took off their night clothes to see and touch each others chests.

Kara didn't mention these things, as if she didn't remember them, but Charlotte did. Things had changed since then. She couldn't keep her mind off of it, of how she regretted being afraid. It was strange to her then, and Kara was a cogent person. It made her nervous to be around her friend again, because Charlotte knew that the same thing might happen, and she wanted to try again. This time she wanted to seize the opportunity, wanted to see what it was like to actually kiss her friend and mean it.

Charlotte's mind was a mess when she sat in her bed, waiting for Kara to finish getting ready for bed and come to her bedroom. She wondered if she would even get a chance to get close to Kara, or if the girl had the same ideas. It would be awkward since they were almost like sisters. They spent so many summers in each other's rooms, listening to the sound of crickets chirping in the warm, moonlit nights. Sometimes they snuck out to chase fireflies and roll in the grass. Panting and laughing quietly they would crawl close together and look at the morning stars. Charlotte always felt warm then in the pit of her stomach to be so close to Kara. It felt right, and she never wanted to be anywhere else.

The memory was disturbed when the door opened, and Kara crept into the room with her nightgown on. It was almost sheer, or maybe that was just Charlotte's imagination. Her dark hair was tousled from a shower and a hasty brushing, still partially wet. Kara smiled and hopped onto Charlotte's bed, bouncing up and down lightly as she moved towards the pillows.

"Your walls are still purple," Kara noted with amusement, looking around at the pastel color.

"I like it," Charlotte replied thickly, not caring too much if Kara didn't like her walls anymore. They were nothing, but being so close to Kara made her hair stand on end. She could feel the other girl's warmth and never realized until then how much she wanted to lie over her, to pull the nightgown off over her head and explore in new ways, to make Kara realize they should be more than just friends.

"I'm kind of tired," Kara admitted. "Can you turn off the light? I'll try to stay up as late as possible. I really want to talk to you, but we can talk more in the morning."

"Yeah, no prob," Charlotte murmured, turning off the bright light. The dim natural light coming through the windows wasn't enough, but when Charlotte turned on her lamp, the room turned into a night sky. Stars in different shades of blue, red, and purple shined onto the walls and ceiling, dotting the room with dim light.

"Wow, it's beautiful," Kara murmured, gazing around the room and then lying back onto the bed. Charlotte sat up for a while, looking down at her friend and wanting to tell her that she was much more beautiful. She listened to her friend speak for a while, about the school she went to and friends she made while she was in a different state. Charlotte only half paid attention, more mesmerized by the rise and fall of Kara's chest as she breathed. She tried to look at Kara's face, but it was obscured by the darkness, only leaving a hint of her expression, a mystery.

When the quiet stream of conversation stopped, Charlotte laid down next to her friend, facing her slightly. Kara radiated heat, and Charlotte wasn't sure if she could touch her without feeling like she would burst into flame. Her skin looked soft, and Charlotte wanted nothing more than to touch, to feel that she was real and soft, to see if Kara would respond to her.

She must have laid there for a long time just watching her friend when Kara turned over, startling her somewhat. Kara's eyes were even darker in the half light, wide and unblinking. Charlotte felt her chest tighten, worrying that Kara could see right through her, suddenly much more nervous than she though she would be.

"I have something to tell you," Kara whispered, her voice earth-shattering in the silence. Her breath smelled like peppermint, and Charlotte wondered if her mouth would taste like it too.

"What is it?" Charlotte asked, but the words never left her mouth, too afraid of disturbing the moment.

"I'm in love," Kara finally said, making Charlotte's heart quicken. "I didn't mean for it to happen, but I realized that we had a lot in common," she said slowly, quietly. Charlotte said nothing, only watching Kara intently, unable to move a muscle.

"I'm afraid of what my parents might think," Kara finally added, turning onto her back again and looking up at the ceiling, at the colorful stars. "I don't think they would approve."

"They don't have to know," Charlotte whispered, sliding her hand into the space between them and staring at it. She could not will it to move any closer. "If two people love each other and aren't hurting anyone... they should be allowed to love each other and not care what anyone else might think."

"We do love each other," Kara murmured, and Charlotte furrowed her brow. "His name is Owen, and he's written me notes. He gave me a bracelet before I left, a promise to stay together."

Charlotte didn't make a sound, but her heart sank into her chest like a brick into water. She looked away from Kara, focusing on a single star on the ceiling until the hot stinging in her eyes went away. When she could breathe again, Charlotte took a silent, shuddering breath and sighed slowly while her friend twisted a charm bracelet round and round her wrist.

"I missed being here," Kara told her. "We can be best friends again."

They were lying together in the grass again, so close but a million miles apart. Charlotte could literally move her hand a few inches and touch her, could finally try to make Kara understand, but she realized that Kara never would. Not without ruining everything.

Charlotte watched the stars until they turned to fireflies and burned away.
