Watanuki was snapping his teeth at Doumeki again.
“Stop eating so much, you-you moron!” He snarled at him.
Doumeki ignored him and grabbed another roll from the bento and stuffed it in his mouth.
His emotionless eyes wandered around the room before he caught Kohane-chan’s gaze. He stared into her knowing eyes before he looked away and swallowed his ootoro. The egg in his pocket felt heavier than usual and he placed his hands on the hidden, precious item.
A slice of his eye was given for Watanuki to see, a bodies worth of blood, shed for Watanuki to stand once more, and a lifetime of memories in an egg that Doumeki would keep unharmed even if his death were the results of its protection. All of this, he has given and shall keep giving. Doumeki will never refuse whatever it was in his power to give Watanuki. Because Yuuko-san maybe the conqueror of Watanuki’s fate, but Doumeki was the carrier of Watanuki’s heart.
When it comes to Watanuki, refusal is never an option, even if the boy shouts and sneers at him to go away. Doumeki knows better.
Doumeki remembers the promise he made to Kohane-chan.
“Please take care of Kimihiro,” she had asked of him.
It wasn’t the first time someone had made that request of Doumeki; in fact, he himself was the first to demand it. It had been on a rainy day, many moons ago, where he had promised himself to never leave Watanuki’s side. On that day he had seen Watanuki by the riverside with a small dead cat in his hands. Watanuki had held the dead cat almost lovingly as he told the corpse that he’d die just as alone as it had.
Since that rainy day Doumeki made it his mission in life to make sure that Watanuki's self-proclaimed prophecy would never come true.
The boy could shout as loud as he could that he wanted Doumeki to leave, but he’d never go. Not when Watanuki’s true fear was being left alone.
A bow and arrow was all Doumeki had to protect Watanuki, and he’d use his power until his fingers bleed and still keep going.
If Watanuki feared death, Doumeki would be there, no matter what, to quiet the boy’s fears.
The little girl across the table from him understood him in a way that very few did. She saw through his mask of indifference in the same way Yuuko-san did.
It seemed in Yuuko-san's world, the world he had first walked into when Watanuki was tiny, slow heartbeats away from death, that Doumeki was truly seen for the first time.
That day, the day that Watanuki had almost died in Doumeki’s arms, the day when his blood had stained Doumeki's shirt red. The same day, that Doumeki had ever really wept. He had held Watanuki close and known no arrow could save him this time.
The only thing Doumeki had that day, was his words, and he used them so rarely that they came out slow and broken.
He’d whispered into Watanuki’s ear as the boy’s life was fading and he’s spirit too far removed to hear.
“I’m here, Kimihiro, I’m here, you are not alone, you’ll never be alone.”
It was the first time he had seen Yuuko-san’s store and since then, nothing has been the same.
When Watanuki grabbed his chopsticks from his hands and calle him a moron, Doumeki stared at him with indifference.
“Idiot,” he called the boy and even if he didn’t share the matching smiles on Kohane-chan and Yuuko-san’s faces, inside he was laughing helplessly with joy.
Their boy was safe, for now.

I'd also like to say I like your Header Image. It looks like Pandora with her cursed box.

Date: 2008-07-24 05:22 am (UTC)I don't know if some of this was intentional, but I think you might have a couple of tense-matching issues--I feel like most of this was written in past tense, but then sentences like "Since that rainy day Doumeki has made it his mission..." sort of threw me.
Other than that, fabulous work. I enjoyed it.

Date: 2008-07-24 06:19 am (UTC)I really hope CLAMP doesn't hurt Watanuki too much. I do like that Yuuko gave Doumeki Watanuki's memories, but--it's all so sad and it better have a good ending!!!
Anywho, Thank you!

Date: 2008-07-25 12:00 am (UTC)The bad part is, sometimes the fanfiction is 100% better than the actual story.
