Summary: So, This s actually a little Future-fic from a script I am trying to write called The Crystal Kingdom kinda like Blade Runner meets I Robot meets Chobits. In this little ficlet Kate is a Marionette who used to be used for Harvesting.
Prompt: #110
Kate walked quickly and quietly along the darkened streets of Crystal City. The neon lights glinted of her life like glass eyes, the only clue that she perhaps wasn't as human as she allowed herself to seem. Her naked body shivered as she pressed her back firmly against a tall frosted building, looking around, listening.
She tightened the towel wrapped around her arm, the blood soaking it through quickly. She wasn't going to last much longer unless she sought some maintenance. She would have to move fast, and silently. She ran across the street, and stepped into the small corner store at the bottom of the high apartment building.
She looked at the sweet woman behind the counter, and the boy stalking shelves happily. Kate still did not understand that, with the AI setting within all Marionettes activated, why they would want to work for humans. But this one seemed happy, content- maybe he was an older model or something. They were always easily amused.
“Excuse me.” Kate's voice came out strained and broken. She cleared her throat in an attempt to lubricate it. “Is Harvey Waitte and David Robertson here?”
The girl from behind the counter's head shot up so fast Kate thought that she might get whiplash. The boy stalking the counters stopped and jumped down walking over quickly to the girl's side. Kate came out of the shadows she was hiding in and moved forward, oddly feeling exposed in the small store with two sets of accusatory eyes on her.
“I'll take her Ally.” The boys said as he smiled a genuine smile. “My name's Shep by the way.”
Shep took the girl by the hand, and shed his over coat. Throwing it over her shoulders before leading her to the elevator.
Harvey was not what Kate had expected. He was like, the Marionette savior. His glasses slid down his narrow nose as his dark curly hair fell in front of his eyes in an attempt to bandage her arm. David came in with four steaming hot cups of tea and set them down on the coffee table.
Harvey's apartment was a strange place. He had real flowers that demanded water and gave off a small odor. He also had a large, real life organic dog. He called it a Great Danish- or something like that. He said it's name was Davidson much to the disgust of David.
Kate looked up at David. There was no doubt in her mind that he was AISE he was stunning. He was the only marionette that Kate had ever seen to have freckles, such care taken in creating his nose that it was slightly bumped looking. He came off as completely human.
“What happened?” He finally asked as Harvey finished smoothing out the bandages.
“Well, they decided to use my skin at a bank. Like they always used to do-- Sell it on the black market I guess. Apparently there's a flesh eating break out somewhere in Asia. So if they can get it, they'll use it.” Kate said with frustration.
“Why can't they just do what they did back in the day before Marionettes.” David huffed as he sat on the sofa and pet Davidson as he ran over.
“Because humans are selfish. Thats why they used marionettes. Because you were all programed to be selfless.” Harvey sat back and took a deep sip of his tea. When he was finished he looked up at Kate gently. “You can stay here as long as you'd like. I know that Jefferson is looking for people to hire at the bank, if you wanted you could work there and make living for yourself.”
Kate stared at him in wonder. Her gaze was interrupted when Shep came through the front door once more. He had a goofy grin with clothing stacked in his arms. “Ally gave me these for you. I hope you like them.”
Shep set them down in front of her and grabbed a cup of tea. His favorite. Kate grabbed a pair of pants and a shirt and headed to the bathroom. It was an interesting life she had to adjust to. One that was fair and would treat her like a human. But was it really what she wanted? To have to work for what she wanted, or was she content living the facade that was life for them?
She, in a strange way, missed her old life. It was so simple. She simply sat in a chair and grew skin for others, eyes, when she stopped being able to self repair then she would go to The Crystal Kingdom – and get reprogrammed.
She leaned against the bathroom wall. And just sat there. Contemplating the complexities of her existence.

Date: 2008-08-31 09:19 am (UTC)This is to be a script for a film or a play? I can see that. You have presented a new world here that has a lot of potential. There is obviously a lot going on that is not yet explained. Yes, I can see these characters developing into a good story. I like the tension you've already created between humans and Marionettes and the potential internal conflict for the Marionettes, programmed to serve, when they choose to break away from their ordained roles. Nice.
A word of advice, if you intend to sell this at some point, you need to at least keep it flocked. An original work that has been published on the web in an open forum will not usually be accepted by a publisher. Also, I would consider finding a good beta, to help you catch the typos and assist with polishing it. Good luck to you in your project. I think this world definitely has potential.
